SWPL | Spartans move into top six with win over Hamilton.

Spartans travelled to New Douglas Park looking to return to winning ways after a goalless draw at Ainslie Park the week prior.

It was Debbi McCulloch’s side who started the game the livelier of the two. Hannah Robinson was first to get a shot off, testing Nicholson from range but the Hamilton ‘keeper was equal to it. Hannah Jordan next had a great lofted pass to Smart through on goal. Her effort was well saved for a corner. Spartans continued to pile on the pressure as Jordan played a lovely through ball into the box which Galbraith just tapped past the post.

McMahon the next to have an effort on goal the Hamilton defence done well to block her goal-ward shot. Reynolds had a shot from the resulting corner but it sailed just wide of the goal. McMahon would be denied by a great save from point blank range moments later after Jordan flashed the ball across the six yard box.

Galbraith then looked threatening down the right hand side, but her cut back just evaded Jordan. Plenty of Spartans chances but the half ended goalless.

The second half began quieter for the visiting side, with Gary Doctor’s side posing more of a threat, without testing Harrison in the Spartans goal.

Robinson produced a superb run down the left hand side but her cross was intercepted. Hamilton then looked to break on the counter, Julianne Ross on hand to deal with any danger. Smart would then come the closer of either side so far, her powerful effort came crashing back of the crossbar to keep the scores level.

The deadlock would finally be broken after a gargantuous effort from the away side, McCafferty played the ball forward to Mason who cut inside and finished cooly into the top corner.

Hamilton looked to pile on pressure for an equaliser in the dying stages but Spartans rounded off a resolute performance with a clean sheet.
