Unlucky 13 for Blues who get stung by young Jags

Logo1The Spartans Under 13s Blues were involved in League Cup Quarter Final action last Sunday when they took on Boroughmuir Thistle Jags.

It was the second year in a row the Blues had reached the final eight stage and they were keen to avenge the 2-13 defeat against the same opposition earlier in the season on league duty.

Due to player availability, it was those who started that would finish what turned out to be a fantastic frenzy of goals.

Unfortunately two of those came in the opening five minutes for the visitors, which saw them play catch-up.  That deficit was reduced shortly after when fine team play saw McPherson, Paterson and McKenzie all exchange passes before Paterson was back on hand to score.   McKenzie then made it all square with a cracking shot.

The goals were coming thick and fast as the Jags then restored their two goal lead – only for the resilient Spartans to pull level once again.  McKenzie and Senior making it 2-2 in what was turning out to be a great advert for girls football.

Incredibly, the game turned on its head with McKenzie grabbing her hat-trick and Senior getting her second as Spartans pulled ahead 6-4.  Just before the break, Jags got goal 11 of the half to make it 6-5 Spartans at the break.

Whatever was in the half-time water, it worked for the visitors as they scored four times in just 10 minutes.

With no subs to call upon to offer fresh legs, Spartans dug deep, and produced a trio of good counter attack play which led to these 3 goals.

Julianna rattled one in off the bar, then Lulu scored following a free-kick then Emma finished off a fine move by lobbing the keeper.

It was the keeper at the other end, Jen who pulled off the save of the game when she saw a shot late and dived well to stop a certain goal before scrambling to palm the ball away to prevent it from rolling in the net.

The Jags then pulled away once again to eventually run out 9-13 winners to progress into the semi final.

Scorers :- Julianna (4) Emma (3) & Lulu (2).

Squad :- Emma Senior, Amy Brydon, Kathleen MacPherson, Lulu Paterson, Emily Smith, Jen Irvine & Julianna McKenzie

Blues Coach Andy Senior said, “For a team that had no subs and were out on their feet, all 7 of them gave 120% effort. We were by far the better team in the 1st half and the players can be extremely proud of their performance.”
